Gospel – Luke 17:5-10

 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”
The Lord replied,
“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, mustard seed
you would say to this mulberry tree,
‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

“Who among you would say to your servant
who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field,
‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’?
Would he not rather say to him,
‘Prepare something for me to eat.
Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink.
You may eat and drink when I am finished’?
Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?
So should it be with you.
When you have done all you have been commanded,
say, ‘We are unprofitable servants;
we have done what we were obliged to do.'”

I have a mustard seed necklace.  It’s unbelievable how tiny this seed is!  The analogy that Christ uses to show us what great wonders our small faith can do – lifting trees with just spoken words – makes me truly want to ask the Lord to “Increase my faith.”  Not so I can remove trees – although I do have a dying one in the backyard that I would love to have off the chore list!  But so that with this faith, I could be closer to God.  Conforming my life more closely to his will is much easier with greater faith.

So how do we get this greater faith?  How do we become closer to God?  We can simply ask!  This is a grace that he wants to pour on us – a prayer that he wants to answer.  So ask him today to increase your faith.  To help you follow his will for your life rather than your own will.  And also pray that you would be open to the changes that an increase in faith will cause.  Because as with everything, be careful what you ask for!  I think this one he will answer faster than I am ready for!
