Gospel – John 20:19-23Holy Spirit stained glass

On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Our risen Christ is commissioning the apostles to spread the Word of God.  He is giving the Holy Spirit to be with them as they go out on their God-given mission.

He gave the Holy Spirit to us too!  He gave Him to us so that we may have help as we go about our own missions as mothers!  And goodness knows we need Him!  The Holy Spirit will be with us as we work to overcome our household tasks.  The Holy Spirit will be with us as we struggle with uncooperative children.  The Holy Spirit will be with us as we watch the years go by.  The Holy Spirit will be with us as we feel inadequate at teaching our children about God.

But the good news is all that we have to do is follow the Lord’s will.  We may never know how our kindnesses, our efforts, our prayers will affect those around us, especially those we love.  But we don’t need to know.  We just need to pass the love of God on to them – the Holy Spirit will do the rest!
