Gospel – Mark 16:15-20

Ascension of Christ

Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized ascension2will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

How the apostles must have felt?  Frightened and timid at the tasks laid out before them?  Empowered and bold knowing that Christ was on their side?  Alone and said without their dear friend beside them?  In awe and amazed at Jesus’ power as he rose into Heaven?   Regardless of how they felt, they had a job to do.  They went forth and preached and God was with them, working through them.   Sometimes we have good days, sometimes bad.  Either way, God sends us forth so that he may work through us.  His works extend far beyond our feelings.  Far beyond our own perceived limitations.  His work needs to be done and we are the hands that he enables to do that Will.
