ascensionGospel – Luke 24:46-53

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;
but stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them
and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage
and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God.

Christ has fulfilled his earthly mission.  He was sent by the Father to redeem us sinners.  He suffered and died for us that the gates of Heaven may be opened.  And now the promise that God intended as Adam and Eve left Eden has been fulfilled.  He leaves his apostles behind with a mission to do and he also leaves them with one promise completed and another promised to them through the coming of the Holy Spirit.  Even in his leaving, the apostles were filled with joy and praised God!

We too must be filled with joy!  Joy that our sins have been forgiven.  Joy that Christ defeated death.  Joy that we have the Holy Spirit with us.  Joy in the blessings of our children.  Joy in the blessings of our spouses.  Joy in the blessing of our friends.  We too can praise God continually!
