ascension2The Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ

Gospel – Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

In this Gospel, I like how the disciples, who experienced the sorrow of the crucifixion of Christ and then the joy and wonder of His Resurrection and Glory, did what He told them going to the mountain but….they still doubted. Their human nature made them question what was going to happen next. Even after all they saw, their faith and trust was lacking. But Jesus reminded them that even when He was gone, He would still be with them.

It makes my doubts and uncertainties seem okay – I still have to overcome them and do what the Lord wants me to do, but questioning what God wants us to do is just human nature. We still have to walk through the doors He opens for us, even though we don’t know what is on the other side, but it’s okay to be nervous about it. The anxiety is outweighed by our love of God and knowing that His plan is far greater than anything we could hope for ourselves.

So we can have those butterflies in our stomachs and we hold on tight to our Father’s hand and take our steps toward an unknown adventure!
