martha and maryGospel – Luke 10:38-42

Jesus entered a village
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
“Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me.”
The Lord said to her in reply,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her.”

Which one are you?  I am definitely a Martha with busy hands and an active mind, always thinking about the next thing that needs to be done.  Seldom do I find the time to sit and read the Bible or meditate on a devotional.  I am more of the “read a quick devotional in 2 minutes and think about it while I do dishes or fold laundry or drive to yet another activity.”  But I can see how Mary has chosen the better part.  While it would be wonderful to take the time to sit in the stillness and listen for the voice of God speaking in my heart, it won’t help my chores get done or my errands run.  So I must figure out a way to “choose the better part” in my heart and mind, not allowing myself to be “anxious and worried about many things,” but allowing my hands to work while my heart is devoted to the Lord.
