Gospel – Mark 1:7-11

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: “One mightier than I is coming after me.

I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.

I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John.

On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.

And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”baptism of christ2

Recently, in my SOR class, one of my 4th graders asked me why, if Jesus was sinless, did he have to be baptized in the Jordan. My response was that Christ had John the Baptist baptize him for our sake – so that we could see the Holy Spirit descending upon him and hear the Father’s voice declaring Jesus as his son. We could see through the baptism in the Jordan that Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Light.

I was listing to a program on EWTN radio earlier this week that added to my explanation. Christ didn’t go into the waters to make himself pure and sinless, but rather, he went into the waters to give the waters the power to make others pure and sinless. Not only was his baptism symbolic, but also powerful to allow all of us to have our original sin removed when we are washed with the same waters that Christ purified.
