Gospel Reading and Thoughts for February 22, 2015

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

 

With Lent beginning this week, we see that Christ is drawing into a season of fasting and prayer, just like we are. I’m sure that Lent will not be an easy time for each of us, with temptations to pull us away from our Lenten promises, but we can take comfort that Christ too when through a long period of struggle and suffering. But Christ knew the endgame – after all of his isolation, He knew that the kingdom of God was at hand and He needed to be ready. We too will need to be ready for the end of Lent with the beautiful Easter celebration.
