St. Gianna Beretta Molla

Feast Day – April 28

Patron saint of mothers and pregnant womenSt. Gianna2

Gianna Beretta was born in Italy in 1922 as the tenth of thirteen children.  She cherished helping people and became a pediatric doctor, opening her own practice.  She met her husband Pietro Molla in1954, and they married and had three children together.  After two miscarriages, she was finally pregnant with her fourth child.  During this pregnancy, she was diagnosed with cancer on her uterus.    She and her husband faced the prospect of either having treatments and losing her baby or having her baby and allowing the disease to progress through her body.  She chose life for her unborn child and had a surgery to remove the tumor, but put off further treatments.  On April 21, 1962, Good Friday, her daughter, Gianna Emanuela, was born.  Only a week later, Gianna Beretta Molla passed away at the age of 39.

She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2004 with her husband and four children in attendance.  Her youngest daughter has continued her mother’s work as a doctor, serving others.

St. GiannaSt. Gianna is considered more of a modern day saint as she worked hard to balance her work and family.  She was a working mom who strove to fulfill both vocations to their fullest in devout service to others.

So, ask St. Gianna to pray for a pregnant friend and ask for her intercession for your own balance of work and family too!
