Blessed Chiara “Luce” Badano

Feast Day – October 29Chiara

Chiara was born in 1971 in Italy to parents who desperately wanted a child and waited eleven years for their blessing to appear.  She grew up as a sweet, lovable and devout child.  She always thought of others first and looked to the Lord to show her what would become of her life.  She was very active and popular, drawing people to God, not with her words but with her actions.  She was deeply involved with a movement within the Catholic Church called Focolare, which focused on the community of the church.  She consecrated her life to God at the young age of 16.  At the age of 17 while playing tennis, she had a sharp pain in her shoulder.  She was diagnosed with severe and aggressive bone cancer.  Still she didn’t receive the news with bitterness or frustration, but continued to be a light of Christ to others as she suffered in grace, offering up her pain for others.  She died only a year or two later in 1990 and was beatified in  2010.

Chiara is a beautiful example of a young person gave her life entirely to God, even unto death.  She was selfless and proclaimed the Gospel with her every action.  May we all be a little more like Chiara – passionate about Christ, devoted to the church community, and ever submitting to God’s will for our lives.
