Advent – Preparing for Christmas

advent2The decorations in the church have changed – purple is everywhere!  Purple, signifying preparation, is in our candles, vestments, and cloths.

And with all the things to do on our Christmas to-do list, we have to be cautious that we don’t become too focused on the material preparations, and remember all of the spiritual preparations we must make in our hearts.

What are some of the ways you and your children prepare for Christmas in this season of Advent?

Here are a few of my ideas:

  1.  Have an advent candle in your home.  Make the lighting of the candle a little bit of a ceremony each week.advent
  2. Bring in food for a food drive or toys for a toy drive.  This helps our children recognize others in need.
  3. Read an extra devotional to your children each day.   Bring their hearts closer to God.
  4. Go to Reconcilation.
  5. Sing Christmas carols at a nursing home.
  6. Spend some time in Adoration.
  7. Call or visit loved ones.
  8. Pray the rosary as a family.
  9. Ring the Salvation Army bell.
  10. Make a big deal of setting out the nativity set.  Make it the centerpiece of your home.

Have a great advent!
