Gospel – John 1:29

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

John was baptizing people not to remove their sin – at that time, no one believed that was something that could be done.  John was baptizing people to change their future – a baptism of repentance and a change in their lives.  Christ did not need John to baptize him.  He had no sin to repent of.  He had no need to change his life for the better.

John needed to baptize Christ for our benefit – so that we could see the heavens open up and the Holy Spirit descend upon God’s beloved Son.

Christ’s baptism allowed us to see that we need the Holy Spirit to come down into our lives too.  We need Him to guide us, comfort us, share good and bad with us.  We need the Holy Spirit to show us the way to love the way Christ wants us to love.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
